Description

SENSE OF SIGHT by Witness Bonjisi. This beautiful sculpture is hand carved of stone from Zimbabwe. Commonly referred as “Shona sculpture” as the Shona people make up 70% of the population of Zimbabwe. Shona sculpture is part of an art movement which emerged in Africa in the late 1960s and is now recognized by art collectors as one of the most powerful artforms in the world. The stone is found in quarries throughout Zimbabwe ranging in color from bright greens, yellows, blacks, and browns bearing variations of color within the stone. Many Zimbabwean artists feel spirits are the main source of inspiration. Often times the spirit of the stone speaks directly to them and enables them to chisel away the dead stone and find the sculpture.
