– Title of the talk: Jodorowsky’s Dune
– Speaker: Mikolaj Kubera
– Date and time: Friday 5 May at 7:30 pm
– Venue: Arthall, 8, triq Agius de Soldanis, Victoria, Gozo
– Description of the Event:
In 1973, (just after his “The Holy Mountain” became a big success in Italy and worldwide) a Chilean-French surrealist, mystical director, Alejandro Jodorowsky, set on a journey to turn Frank Herbert’s classic “DUNE” into a movie. He gathered a group of extraordinary artists whom he called “spiritual warriors”, musicians (incl. Pink Floyd) and actors to create a movie he intended to go far beyond a mere adaptation of literature. His ambition was that of creating “a coming of a god”, “a cinematic messiah” that would change the minds of young generation.
The movie was to star Orson Welles, Salvador Dali, Mick Jagger, Udo Kier and Gloria Swanson, among others. Designs were made by Moebius (widely considered France’s best comic book artist) and H.R. Giger (a Swiss artist responsible for the design of “Alien”).
A gigantic production that was supposed to create a talkie as long as 14 hours. The movie was to end with the eponymous planet, Dune, gaining its own consciousness and travelling through the galaxy enlightening other planets, becoming like a Jesus of the universe.
The talk will present Jodorowsky, his vision of Dune (incl. excerpts from documentary “Jodorowsky’s Dune”), his choice of “spiritual warriors” and other collaborators. Free entrance and no reservation required.
