– Title of the talk: Let’s do Things Differently: Modern Theatre at the Turn of the Twentieth-Century
– Speaker: Stefan Aquilina
– Date and time: Friday 4 April at 7:30 pm
– Venue: Arthall, 8, triq Agius de Soldanis, Victoria, Gozo
– Description of the Event:
What made modern theatre special? Why did it surprise audiences, worry authorities, and leave a lasting legacy in contemporary theatre and performance? Using the rich photographic evidence of performances produced in France, Germany, Russia, and England at the turn of the twentieth-century, the presentation will discuss how modern theatre sought to break conventional ways of doing theatre, especially in relation to set design and the actor’s work.
– About the Speaker:
Stefan Aquilina is an Associate Professor of Theatre Studies at the University of Malta. He is fascinated by modern theatre, especially in the way that it sought to be innovative, experimental, and daring. Aquilina sees himself as someone who likes to read, teach, go out with his family, and drink the occasional glass of wine. He is the author or editor of seven books.
