– About Nine Dragon Heads:
The Nine Dragon Heads Environmental Art Symposium was initiated in South Korea by Park, Byoung-Uk in response to the destruction of an important historical site in 1996. It evolved from the original specific eco-political motivation into an open interdisciplinary platform, where an association of artists from around the world implements individual and collaborative art projects related to humanitarian, political, environmental and cultural issues.
The emergence of the Nine Dragon Heads environmental art initiative was inspired by concern for South Korea’s natural, cultural, historical and archaeological landscape and coincided with a period of industrial boom and profound political change. Emerging in the context of economic and infrastructure development, South Korea was a country that actively positioned itself on the global scene.
Nine Dragon Heads, also being part of a clear and distinct continuum of artistic development in Korea initiated during the 1980s and 1990s, wanted to consider artistic and philosophical issues outside of traditional Korean art forms and were motivated to remain under the radar of the military regime and government control in force at that time. In that political environment, an important thread of the development of South Korean contemporary art took place in off-site projects, carried out within mountainous rural areas and remote natural sites.
Nine Dragon Heads Research & Survey 2024 is the project for this year, taking place in Malta, Sarajevo and Venice, and presented in the program of Parallel Exhibition to the 60th Venice Biennale. The emphasis is on the subjects of mutual influences and connections between a major art event and the geography of its realization. It is an ongoing work, but with a clear theme: “Nomadic Party”.
